DESIGN STORY:

The 1927 stool speaks about adaptation to adversity, preservation of crafts and locally-based cooperation. It was created as part of a larger project born out of the movement restriction of 1km-radius imposed in Spain during the easing of lockdown in 2020. A group of designers was invited to participate and produce pieces using solely the resources found within these restricted areas that each could move within. This stool was then envisioned and built using only resources found in the neighbourhood of La Latina, in Madrid.

This stool is produced in collaboration with Juan Sánchez, a local craftsman who runs the esparto grass shop that his grandfather opened in the neighbourhood of La Latina in Madrid almost a century ago.  The seat is made in seagrass rope, a very traditional material used to make chairs, backrests, decorations and other crafts.

HAND-MADE PRODUCTION and SMALL-SCALE MANUFACTURING:

Each independently produced pieces are made by small-scale fabricators and traditional artisans, brought to life through skillful craftsmanship, using high-quality and sustainably-sourced materials. Handmade processes may result in small variations, which adds uniqueness and value to each object. Natural materials may also present subtle differences in tone or color compared to the images shown. In the case of the 1927 stool, the vegetable rope has a greener hue when freshly harvested and applied to the seat, which gradually shifts to a warmer tone as it fully dries over the following weeks.

CIRCULAR AND SUSTAINBLE:

This stool is crafted using sustainably-sourced materials, including FSC-certified ash wood and natural seagrass rope, ensuring that every component comes from responsibly managed resources. These materials are chosen not only for their durability and aesthetic appeal but also for their low environmental impact. The use of renewable and ethically sourced elements reflects a commitment to both quality craftsmanship and environmental responsibility.

The stool is delivered disassembled as part of a design approach rooted in circular principles, focusing on sustainability and long-term efficiency. Flat-packed shipping reduces volume and emissions during transportation, making logistics more environmentally friendly. The modular construction allows for easy assembly, as well as straightforward replacement or recycling of individual parts. This design supports a longer product lifespan while minimizing waste and resource consumption.

Stained wood CARE:

Stained wood is a natural material, and each piece features unique grain patterns and slight color variations. Over time, exposure to sunlight, humidity, and temperature may cause subtle changes in tone or texture. These are normal characteristics of solid wood and do not affect the structural integrity of the product. Avoid direct exposure to heat, moisture, and harsh cleaning agents. Clean regularly with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and immediately dry with a clean cloth. Spills from colored liquids like wine or coffee should be wiped off promptly to prevent staining. Do not use abrasive materials or products, as they can damage the stained surface. For significant repairs or refinishing, always consult a professional.
